KPCC’s Format Change
KPCC-FM (89.3) recently took a giant step backward into the ‘90s when it changed its lively and fresh “Classic American” format to dull, dull, dull talk radio by day and stale, re-breathed, ersatz KSCA three nights a week (Morning Report, July 1). Station officials said the Corp. for Public Broadcasting told them to change, to bring their numbers up, and they believed it. To effect this change, KPCC hired Shana, a “personality,” formerly of KLSX: the vanguard of “trailing edge” broadcasting. All that remains to be done is a Hootie & the Blowfish concert giveaway.
What makes this format change so pathetic is that KPCC had been somnambulant for years. Then living legends like Tony Bennett were discovered by people who got tired of hearing the whine and snarl of grunge. Who provided listeners with this? KPCC.
And now they’ve tossed it for last week’s stale leftovers. Congratulations. Maybe Kato Kaelin could fit in over there also.
