JAPAN : U.S. Turns In Sailor Accused in Slashing
The United States handed over a sailor to Japanese authorities in connection with the slashing and robbing of a Japanese woman, the latest crime to fuel opposition to U.S. military bases here. Police said Kaori Tanigawa, 20, was cut in the throat and had her handbag stolen while walking in a park in Sasebo, near Nagasaki, Tuesday morning. Tanigawa, who was in satisfactory condition in a hospital, identified the attacker as a “foreigner.” A U.S. Navy spokesman identified the sailor as seaman Terrence Michael Swanson, 20, of Anoka, Minn. Swanson, 20, had served on the guided-missile frigate McClusky since November 1994.
