The article about movie watching in foreign countries (Traveler’s Journal, June 23) reminded me of my first trip abroad. In 1971, armed with a duffel bag, a Eurailpass and little money, I set off for 10 weeks overseas. After attempting to make myself understood in several countries using my high school French, I began to take this struggle for granted. In a small, makeshift theater in Tel Aviv, I watched a movie subtitled in Hebrew and French. I strained to make out the French meanings. Minutes later, I realized that the dialogue was in English!
