Lachemann Makes Pitch for Pitching

Manager Marcel Lachemann continues to wonder when accomplishment will catch up with expectations for his starting rotation. The staff’s failures are the key reason the Angels are in last place today, he said.

“Everyone in this division [the American League West] can hit,” Lachemann said. “Pitching is the key. I think we have the pitching to make a run, but I haven’t seen it yet.”

Seattle designated hitter Edgar Martinez had his bruised right rib cage X-rayed Sunday morning at Anaheim Memorial Hospital. The results were termed “normal.”

Martinez, starting at third base for the first time this season on Saturday, collided with catcher John Marzano while chasing a second-inning pop up.

Neither Martinez nor Marzano, who had 30 stitches to close a cut over his left eye, started Sunday.

Right fielder Tim Salmon missed Sunday’s game to be with his wife, Marci, who delivered the couple’s second child. Jacob Timothy Salmon was born Sunday afternoon and weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces. . . . Third baseman George Arias is eight for 12 with four RBIs in the last three games.
