Merely donning the red, white and blue wasn’t enough for the U.S. women’s volleyball team, so many of the players braided the colors of the flag into their hair with ribbons.

Teee Williams, a Long Beach native, took credit for the most elaborate designs, but said it took her only a few minutes to design the hair of her teammates.

The women stopped well short of the “volleybald” trend that was set by the U.S. men’s team in ’92 and picked up by Greco-Roman wrestlers in Atlanta.

“Too much time on our hands in the village,” Caren Kemner said.

“But we weren’t going to shave our heads.”

Footnote: The men’s team has grown its collective hair back.
