Beckman Reports Increase in 2nd-Quarter Sales, Profit

Beckman Instruments Inc. posted a 38% increase in second-quarter earnings on a 15% gain in sales.

The company, which makes automated systems and supplies for laboratories, reported that second-quarter profit rose to $19 million, or 65 cents a share, from $13.8 million, or 48 cents a share, for the 1995 second quarter. Sales grew to $265.2 million from $230.6 million.

First half net earnings increased 36% to $32.7 million, or $1.12 a share, from $24.1 million, or 84 cents a share, for the 1995 first half. Sales were up 12% to $490 million from $435.6 million.

The company said it is benefiting from offering a wider variety of products as a result of strategic alliances and acquisitions this year.
