Mugger Makes Gigante Mistake in Targeting
The man arrested after a mugging was stunned when police told him who the victim was: the 94-year-old mother of reputed mob boss Vincent “The Chin” Gigante.
Prosecutors allege that Gigante, known for walking the streets dressed in a bathrobe, runs the Genovese crime family while feigning mental illness to avoid prosecution on charges of murder and racketeering.
Police said his mother, Yolanda Gigante, was targeted Sunday as she walked near her home in Greenwich Village on the arm of her other son, Father Louis Gigante, a Roman Catholic priest.
The attacker snatched her wallet, and Louis Gigante gave chase but couldn’t catch the man, newspapers said. A passerby who saw the attack stopped police, and they arrested Willie King a few blocks away.
