Historic Ship Ready to Sail
Volunteers are helping the Star of India, the historic iron-hulled tall ship moored at the Embarcadero in downtown San Diego, prepare to set sail for all-day cruises as part of the civic hoopla attached to the Republican National Convention.
The cruises, on Aug. 10, 11 and 18, will mark the first time in five years that the 133-year-old Star has set sail. One of the last survivors from the Golden Age of Sail, the ship will be towed into the shipping channel before her giant sails are unfurled and she ventures beyond Point Loma.
Among the passengers will be Republican VIPs and civic dignitaries. When she’s not running before the wind, the Star of India is open to visitors as an attraction maintained by the San Diego Maritime Museum.
The Star was launched at Ramsey in the Isle of Man on Nov. 14, 1863, and remains the world’s oldest merchant ship still afloat.
