SEAL BEACH — A team of Rockwell International Corp. researchers was chosen to oversee a $3-million contract to develop ways to use a system of location-detecting satellites in battle, the company announced Wednesday.
The Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles, selected Rockwell for the 13-month NAVWAR project, he said. Work will begin in the next month and will involve staff from Rockwell’s Systems Development Center in Seal Beach, the company said.
Rockwell was selected in April to design, develop and produce the next generation of Global Positioning System satellites. If all options are exercised, that contract has a potential value of approximately $1.3 billion and could include construction of up to 33 spacecraft through 2012, the company said.
