Cool Cubed

When the heat’s on, keep your drinks cool with flavored ice cubes. Like popular flavored waters, these cubes give beverages the subtle tastes of fruits and herbs. They’re pretty to look at and easy to make; pop a few cubes into your favorite beverages and add a new twist.

To make herb cubes, all you have to do is fill an ice cube tray one-third full of water, place a leaf of mint, lemon basil or fennel on each segment and freeze. When that is frozen, fill the tray to the top with water and freeze again.

For citrus cubes, remove the peel of an orange, a lemon or three limes and cut them into long, thin strips. Juice the fruit, strain the juice and mix it with 2 cups of water. Twist the strips of peel and place one in each compartment of an ice cube tray. Pour the juice over and freeze.

To make berry cubes, place a raspberry, strawberry, blueberry or blackberry in each of the ice cube tray’s compartments. Puree a handful of berries and strain the juice into two cups of water. Pour this over the berries and freeze.
