Update / Follow-up on the news : Debate on Junior High ‘Graduation’ Ongoing
The debate continues over whether youngsters completing junior high in the Fullerton School District are actually graduating.
The school board has been considering a change in the wording of commencement certificates given to students as they finish eighth grade. Instead of receiving “diplomas of graduation,” those who complete junior high with at least a 1.5 grade-point average would get “certificates of promotion.”
Also, graduation exercises would be called promotions.
Trustee Robert C. Fisler said he has some doubts about the proposal because many families see graduations as major milestones in their children’s lives. He said that some pupils are the first in their families to finish junior high, so the diplomas are highly valued.
A decision on the matter is expected in mid-August.
