Vermont Connecticut Royster; Former Wall Street Journal Editor

Vermont Connecticut Royster, 82, a former writer and editor of the Wall Street Journal who won two Pulitzer Prizes. Born in Raleigh, N.C., Royster studied at the University of North Carolina and reported for several newspapers in that area before joining the Journal in 1936. He won the Pulitzer in 1953 for editorial writing and in 1984 for distinguished commentary. Royster was editor of the Journal’s editorial page from 1958 until his retirement in 1971, and continued to write his column, “Thinking Things Over,” until 1986. That year, President Ronald Reagan awarded him a Presidential Medal of Freedom for his common-sense columns. After leaving the newspaper, Royster taught journalism at the University of North Carolina. He had served in the Navy during World War II. On Monday in Raleigh, N.C.
