IN THE LION’S DEN by Mitsuaki Iwago, translated from the Japanese by Michiko Shigaki & Thomas L.J. Daly (Chronicle Books: $19.95, 119 pp., paperback original). The noted nature photographer spent more than a year in East Africa to obtain these intimate shots of lions in the wild. Lions live in matrilineal prides, and Iwago’s dramatic photographs reveal their complex sociology, as the big cats hunt, fight, mate, sleep and care for their cubs. Although the pictures are strikingly beautiful, they never seem gimmicky: Iwago allows the beauty of his subjects to emerge.
