SEOUL —
A landslide triggered by torrential rain buried two barracks in which dozens of soldiers were sleeping Friday, killing 20 of them.
Twenty-eight soldiers were rescued within an hour after the predawn landslide near Chorwon, a city close to the border with North Korea, Defense Ministry officials said. Nine were hospitalized, some in serious condition.
Rescue work was hampered by floods, the officials said. Weather forecasters said 7 inches of rain fell in the region early Friday.
