Times Wire Services

Eszter Matefi scored nine first-half goals for Hungary, which took advantage of a U.S. mistake for a 30-24 victory that knocked the Americans from medal contention.

Helga Nemeth finished with six goals for the Hungarians, who squandered much of a 19-8 lead, saw the U.S. close to within 25-21 and then lose momentum with six minutes to play when Carol Peterka returned to the court too soon and drew another two-minute penalty on top of her previous punishment.

In other women’s games, South Korea led the entire game in a 25-19 victory over Angola; Denmark beat China, 33-21, and Germany beat Norway, 28-23.
