Laguna Niguel Councilman Is Named Chairman of Fire Agency for Second Year

Saying they want continuity on the Orange County Fire Authority, members of the joint powers group have chosen Laguna Niguel Councilman Thomas W. Wilson as chairman for the second year in a row.

The year-old organization selected Mission Viejo Mayor Sherri M. Butterfield as the vice chairman.

The agency is made up of 19 cities that separated from the county last year to form their own fire authority.

The county still has a voice in the new group, with two members of the Board of Supervisors having a vote on fire authority affairs.

Butterfield said the agency is “still in the process of resolving some of the transition issues involved in separating from Orange County.”

“We need to establish our own identity,” she said. “There is value to continuing with the people who began the separation.”

Among issues yet to be settled is establishing a payroll system for firefighters, who do not work standard 40-hour weeks.
