Jochen Schuemann and his German Soling crew waited out one thunderstorm, then wasted no time in dispatching the world champion Russians for the gold medal in yachting.
The United States won the bronze, beating Great Britain, 3-1, by overcoming a 1-0 deficit.
Schuemann and his crew of Thomas Flach and Bernd Jaekel swept Russia in three races to capture the gold medal for the second time.
Californians Jeff Madrigali, Jim Barton and Kent Massey won two of the bronze medal races after the storm to beat the British team of Andrew Beadsworth, Barry Parkin and Adrian Stead.
It was only the second medal for Americans after winning nine in 1992.
