Notes about your surroundings Bay Watch--Volunteer organizations or classes, from environmental groups to Scout troops, are invited to examine Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve once a month, year round. The project will help chart marine biology in the bay through a series of scientific tests.

These tests include seining, in which a 100-foot wall of net is towed offshore and dragged back to shore. Seining provides a census of fish in the bay. On previous occasions groups have brought in California halibut, stingrays, anchovy, turbot and, of course, seaweed. The fish are then weighed, measured and released back into the bay.

Groups are limited in size from 10 to 30 participants. No experience is necessary because a naturalist will assist in the procedures. Those interested should contact the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve and Regional Park at (714) 640-6746.
