From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Vice President Al Gore assailed Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole on his education policy at a teachers’ convention in Cincinnati. Dole has proposed grants for low- and middle-income families who want to opt out of their designated public school and send their children to other public, private or religious schools. “On education, Dole doesn’t make the grade,” he told nearly 3,000 delegates and guests at the American Federation of Teachers convention. Gore also mentioned the social and educational programs supported by President Clinton. Republican lawmakers countered that while Gore was in Ohio, they were in Washington working to improve the educational system.
