The Palestinian Authority jailed three policemen Saturday for torturing a prisoner to death and formed a committee to look into the killing of a protester in the West Bank.

The militant Islamic organization Hamas called for its military wing to attack “Zionist targets” to avenge the two deaths.

A military court in Jericho found three Palestine Liberation Organization police officers guilty of torturing to death 26-year-old Mahmoud Jemayel in a Nablus jail.

Jemayel died Wednesday night after he was tortured.

The Jericho court sentenced Capt. Abdul Hakim Hijjo and Lt. Omar Kadumi to 15 years plus hard labor for the killing. Sgt. Ahmed Biddo received a 10-year prison term plus hard labor.

Tensions rose in the West Bank after Jemayel’s death, and Palestinian police shot a demonstrator to death during clashes Friday at a prison in the town of Tulkarm.
