MEDAL DETECTORS

Share

In the wake of her gold-medal women’s singles tennis victory over Spain’s Arantxa Sanchez Vicario on Friday, Newport Beach’s Lindsay Davenport was escorted very willingly, from venue to venue and press gathering to press gathering, all over Atlanta. If you had a note pad or a camera, she was there, thanks to U.S. Olympic Committee public relations officials.

One problem. Not wanting to part with her gold medal, Davenport put it around her neck and headed out. And whenever she had to go through a metal detector, which in Atlanta these days is about every five steps, she set off the buzzer.

Pretty soon, she knew what was coming, so she just took her medal off, dropped it into one of those little plastic buckets and walked on through. The looks on the faces of the security people were priceless.
