British Airways Talked About Merging With American: British Airways said it had discussed the possibility of a merger before the two companies announced the joint operating alliance that has raised eyebrows on both sides of the Atlantic. British Airways Chief Executive Robert Ayling said the talks with Dallas-based American Airlines took place about two years ago, but it was decided the obstacles to such a move would be too great. American executives were not immediately available for comment. Instead of a full merger, British Airways and American are now battling criticism from rival airlines and consumer groups in a bid to win approval from U.S. and British authorities for the marketing and operating alliance the two carriers announced on June 11.
