CorVel Signs Large Medical Insurance Deal

CorVel Corp., an Irvine-based medical case management firm, said it has signed an agreement to begin handling case management for several Nationwide Insurance Enterprise’s workers’ compensation, liability, accident and health insurance units.

Nationwide, based in Ohio, is one of the largest insurers in the country.

CorVel officials said the deal represents the largest case management contract ever between a major insurance company and a single vendor. CorVel reviews medical claims and develops methods, including managed health care programs, for clients to contain or reduce medical and disability costs.

Under this agreement, most of Nationwide’s external case management programs will be consolidated with CorVel. Nationwide companies initially participating in the program are Employers Insurance of Wausau, GatesMcDonald and Nationwide Insurance Cos. Other subsidiaries will be added to the CorVel case management program at a later date.
