City Aims to Generate Reel Interest

People who own homes or businesses in the city might be able to see their properties on television or in the movies.

The city’s economic development department is putting together a slide portfolio of potential locations that will be forwarded to the Orange County Film Commission, which maintains a library of prospective sites for entertainment industry scouts.

John Sherwood, Dana Point’s manager of economic development, said the entire community benefits from film projects. Production crews dine and shop locally, he said, boosting tax revenue, and residents share in the excitement of show business.

Also, property owners are compensated for use of their property during production, Sherwood said.

“We have a multitude of unique and picturesque locations, yet only a handful of locations at the Film Commission Library,” he said.

According to the commission, 93 productions were shot in Orange County in 1995, generating $4.1 million.

Some of the movies filmed in the county last year include “The American President,” which includes scenes at the Orange County Courthouse; “The Fan,” filmed at Anaheim Stadium; and “Up Close and Personal,” which features John Wayne Airport.
