Kevorkian Attends Suicide of Woman
Dr. Jack Kevorkian wheeled the body of a woman into a Pontiac hospital, telling officials that she was a Lou Gehrig’s disease victim who died in his presence. Kevorkian identified the woman as Elizabeth Mertz, 59, of Cincinnati, said Dr. Michael Dargay, an emergency room physician at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital. It was the 34th suicide for which Kevorkian has been present since 1990. Kevorkian’s attorney, Geoffrey Fieger, confirmed Mertz’s identity and said she had traveled to the Detroit area with her 30-year-old son, Jack.
