Railroad Crossings Marked for Repairs
Los Angeles City Councilman Hal Bernson announced an agreement Wednesday with Southern Pacific Railroad to repair two railroad crossings that have generated dozens of complaints from motorists in Canoga Park.
Later this month, city workers will make improvements to railroad crossings on Parthenia Street and Nordhoff Street near Canoga Avenue, Bernson said.
“My field office receives more calls about the sorry state of these railroad crossings than any other issue except for sewer service charges,” said Bernson, who represents parts of the northwest San Fernando Valley.
Responding to calls from motorists who complain about the jolts they experience driving over the tracks, Bernson introduced a motion calling for the city to find the funds to repair the crossings. Last year, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority provided the city $186,000 to make improvements on three of the worst Valley crossings.
Due to delays, city workers have been able to complete repairs on only one crossing, at Canoga Avenue and Roscoe Boulevard in Canoga Park.
City officials say bureaucratic red tape at Southern Pacific has caused many of the delays.
The work on the two crossings in Canoga Park is expected to begin Aug. 21 and be completed Aug. 30.
