Meeting to Focus on Farm Workers

Share

Laborers, union leaders and growers will meet in Oxnard on Sunday to discuss issues relating to farm workers in Ventura County.

More than 35 representatives from the government, United Farm Workers and private agricultural interests will meet with workers and the public beginning at noon at Blackstock Junior High School at 701 Bard Road, said Mary Navarro-Aldana, employment program supervisor for the state Employment Development Department.

Topics will include wage laws, hours, housing, safety, transportation and pesticides. As a whole, Ventura County generates few complaints about farm conditions, Navarro-Aldana said.

“An indication of the relationship between the farm workers and the industry is the diversity of the participants at the meeting,” she said.

Attendees may ask questions or file complaints, Navarro-Aldana said, and the Labor Department will use the information to target enforcement and education efforts. Complaints about working conditions in the agricultural industry may also be made by calling (800) 733-3899.
