Kimberly Cook, 13, has been awarded a 1996 Youth in Action grant of $1,000 from the National 4-H Council for her proposal to host backyard composting workshops for families.

As a result, Cook, along with the Garden Grove recycling office, will hold a series of workshops through November at various locations. Residents can learn how to reduce landfill waste by turning some household trash into nutrient-rich compost for lawns and gardens.

The monthly workshops will be on Saturday mornings, officials said. Information: (714) 741-5554.
