Tribe Called Quest is among the most progressive groups hip-hop has to offer, blending jazz and funk rhythms and blues poetry into a combination that stimulates the mind and works the body. “Beats, Rhymes and Life,” the New York trio’s fourth album, sold 173,000 copies last week according to SoundScan, and is No. 1 on both The Times’ Southern California chart and the national chart. Sublime’s major-label debut is only No. 62 nationally, but on its home turf the band entered the chart at No. 4--a bittersweet success in the wake of leader Brad Nowell’s death. Alanis Morissette, Nas, Tracy Chapman and Celine Dion, meanwhile, maintain their perpetual Top 10 positions in the Southland charts.
