TCI’s Loss Widens: Tele-Communications Inc., citing investments in cable systems and new technology, reported a second-quarter net loss that was nearly double that of a year ago. For the quarter ended June 30, the nation’s largest cable TV operator lost $184 million, or 29 cents per share, on revenue of $2 billion. In the same quarter of 1995, Englewood, Colo.-based TCI reported a net loss of $95 million, or 16 cents, on revenue of $1.6 billion. “TCI’s second-quarter results were in line with our expectations,” said John Malone, TCI president and chief executive. TCI added 13,000 cable customers during the quarter, bringing its total to just under 13 million. It made no major systems acquisitions during the period. TCI said Liberty Media, its unit that produces and distributes programming, posted a net income of $4 million, or 2 cents a share, on revenue of $321.7 million in the second quarter. That contrasts with a net loss of $12.1 million on revenue of $343 million in the same period last year.
