Ray W. Fuller; Pharmacologist Helped Develop Prozac

Ray W. Fuller, 60, a co-discoverer of the antidepressant Prozac. A native of Illinois who studied at Southern Illinois and Purdue universities, Fuller joined Eli Lilly & Co. in 1963 as a senior pharmacologist and devoted his career to research. In the early 1970s, Fuller and colleagues David T. Wong and Bryan B. Molloy discovered fluoxetine--a drug that enhances the brain chemical serotonin, which is linked to clinical depression and other mental disorders. Lilly manufactures Prozac, the brand name of fluoxetine and the first of a revolutionary class of antidepressants. On Sunday in Indianapolis, Ind., of leukemia.
