GM Unit Pays Fine in Auto Repo Case: The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said General Motors Acceptance Corp. has paid $193,130 to settle charges that it violated the state’s business and profession code by failing to give consumers proper notice when repossessing cars in 1992 and ’93. The district attorney’s office said GMAC failed to tell consumers where their cars were being held or the amount they needed to pay to recover them. GMAC also failed to notify consumers that they could apply for a 10-day extension of the deadline for paying past-due auto payments and penalties, the office said. The case grew out of 20 consumer complaints involving GMAC’s Mid-Wilshire office, which is now closed.
