LOS ALAMITOS — Army reserve soldiers from the 176th Medical Brigade were to leave today from the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center for Europe as part of a U.S.-led peacekeeping mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The 145 reservists from Orange, San Diego and Los Angeles counties and other areas of Southern California will be making several stops before heading to Germany later this month, where they will relieve soldiers who will be moving to the former Yugoslavia, said U.S. Army spokesman Ted Bartimus.
“They’ll be replacing active troops in Europe,” said Bartimus, who added that it remained a possibility the reservists might go to Bosnia. “That can’t be ruled out.”
The reservists--doctors, nurses and other medical specialists--are expected to remain in Europe for about 140 days as part of NATO’S Operation Joint Endeavor, a military agreement reached in Dayton, Ohio.
The men and women are expected to leave the reserve center, the regional Army reserve headquarters for Southern California, Nevada and Arizona, about 4:30 a.m. today, officials said.
The reservists were chosen for the mission based on their various medical specialties, and the military’s specific medical needs in Germany, Bartimus said.
