Premier’s Supporters Sweep Elections

Supporters of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri routed opponents in the first phase of parliamentary elections, results showed, strengthening his power to deal with Lebanon’s economic problems. Sunday’s elections filled only 35 of the 128 seats in the half-Christian, half-Muslim parliament. The Lebanese will go to polls for the next four Sundays to choose the remaining legislators. Sunday’s balloting was Lebanon’s second parliamentary election since the end of the 1975-90 civil war.
