National Semiconductor Corp. Cuts 170 More Jobs: The Santa Clara, Calif.-based computer chip company said most of the cuts are in California and that it will take a charge in its fiscal first quarter. The cuts are the third in three months and bring the total number of jobs cut to 590. The company has 20,000 employees worldwide. The charge, first announced in June, is expected to be $280 million to $320 million. National has been struggling with falling prices and demand for its products. It has restructured into four businesses in an effort to improve its performance. In June, National said it would separate its Maine, Utah, Malaysia and Philippine plants into a subsidiary.
