Mall Site Considered for Annual Festival

Forced to find a new home, the Simi Valley Days festival may relocate, at least temporarily, to land on which the city hopes to build a regional shopping mall.
The City Council decided Monday to consider placing the festival on property north of the Simi Valley Freeway at 1st Street. A housing project under construction will soon cover the festival’s current site at Los Angeles Avenue and Madera Road.
Temporarily moving Simi Valley Days to the site north of the freeway would not interfere with city efforts to build a shopping mall on the site, officials said.
However, preparing the hilly site for the festival would require moving 15,000 cubic yards of earth and building a road into the property--an estimated cost of between $75,000 and $100,000.
City officials will seek a more precise cost estimate, and also will determine if any local businesses would provide grading services at a reduced cost, Councilman Bill Davis said.
Other potential locations, including Tapo Canyon Park and a site near the city’s sanitation plant, were rejected.
