Senior Police Program Seeks Volunteers

Share

Four years after it was formed to be the “eyes and ears” of law enforcement officials, the Associated Seniors Action Program is recruiting volunteers.

Senior volunteers free up time for sheriff’s deputies, performing time-consuming tasks that might not otherwise be provided, and since 1992 have donated more than 42,000 hours, said Lt. Paul Sullivan, chief of police services.

Volunteer tasks include making home checks for vacationing residents, writing parking citations, reporting graffiti, patrolling the city on bicycle and by van, providing an elderly support program, assisting City Hall employees and helping with city-sponsored events.

Last year, volunteers wrote 980 parking tickets, Sullivan said.

To qualify for the program, volunteers must be in good health and have no criminal history. Requirements are a valid driver’s license, a 12th-grade education and a desire to serve the community.
