New Lights to Save Schools $46,000
Five Conejo Valley schools are receiving new, energy-saving fluorescent lights thanks to a $222,400 low-interest loan from the California Energy Commission.
By replacing outmoded lights at Westlake High School, Colina and Los Cerritos middle schools and Sequoia and Redwood intermediate schools, the school district will save about $46,500 a year, according to Assemblyman Nao Takasugi, who represents the district.
“These light fixtures use approximately 60% of the energy the old fixtures did, so they’ll pay for themselves in five years,” said Sean G. Corrigan, the school district’s planning director.
Last year, the school district replaced lights at Thousand Oaks High School with a $113,000 loan. The district intends to replace the energy-guzzling lights at all of its 26 schools.
The Energy Commission’s Bright Schools Program loans carry a 6.6% interest rate and are repayable over six years. Repayment is deferred for one year after installation is complete.
Lights at the five schools will be replaced by the time classes start Sept. 5.
