The City Council this week approved a proposal to build a long-awaited roller hockey rink at the Boys and Girls Club and agreed to contribute $20,000 toward construction costs.
In exchange for the money, the city will get a joint-use agreement with the club that designates specific times for public use of the hockey facility.
“Everybody’s excited,” said Kim Maxwell, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club. “We’re very pleased that once again the city of Laguna Beach has supported us.”
The roller hockey rink will be behind the Boys and Girls Club property, at 1085 Laguna Canyon Road. The facility will include a portable rink, goals, bleachers and a Plexiflor surface laid over asphalt. The playing surface will measure 50 feet by 100 feet.
Maxwell said the cost for the facility will be about $19,050, plus $11,210 for the new asphalt and special surface. Along with the city funds, the club has a $10,000 grant from the R.C. Baker Foundation, a Garden Grove-based nonprofit organization, to help pay for the rink.
The Boys and Girls Club plans to organize three or four hockey leagues that will play year-round. In addition, the club will schedule supervised open times when the rink will be available to the public.
Construction is set to begin next week, when the asphalt is poured. Club officials said they hope to have the facility completed by late fall.
“This will keep the kids off the street,” said Craig Reynolds, a Laguna Beach resident and a parent. “It’s something we need.”
