Enrollment on the first day of class for the fall semester at Irvine Valley College was up 6% over last year, college officials reported.

The college had 9,467 students enrolled on Aug. 19, compared with 8,937 on the first day of instruction last fall.

Officials, however, expect an additional 1,500 students to enroll by the Aug. 30 registration deadline, bringing the total to about 10,900 students, said Terry Burgess, the college’s vice president of instruction.

College administrators attribute the increase to the 28 classes added to the curriculum this fall. These include classes in observational astronomy, digital graphic design, interactive media, art and international history.

Several classes, including electronics, physics, marine geology, real estate, environmental technology and journalism, still have openings for the 1996 fall semester. Students also can register for the short-term semester, which begins on Oct. 14.

Irvine Valley College has extended registration hours through the filing deadline to better accommodate students. The college’s office of admissions and records will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 30. The bookstore also will be open during those hours.

Classes cost $13 a unit.

Irvine Valley College is at 5500 Irvine Center Drive. Information: (714) 451-5220.
