Power Failures
* Michael T. Moore’s article (Opinion, Aug. 18) on the reasons for the recent power blackouts was very revealing: greed. The power companies have abdicated their obligation to the public trust in order to maximize profit.
Since “money” is the operative word here, may I propose a solution: multimillion-dollar class-action lawsuits after every blackout with punitive damages, for lost business, damaged food in refrigerators, damaged files and programs in computers, etc. Then the power companies may think twice whether it is worth saving a few thousand bucks on trimming the trees under the power lines.
