Radinsky Volunteers for Overtime

Relief pitcher Scott Radinsky was so angry after catcher Todd Hundley singled off his glove to load the bases with one out in the eighth inning that he fielded 70 grounders from coach Mark Cresse after the Dodgers’ 6-5 victory over the Mets on Sunday at Dodger Stadium.

Hundley hit a comebacker that Radinsky might have been able to turn into a double play, but he failed to field it cleanly.

Radinsky then walked Carlos Baerga on a 3-and-2 pitch as the Mets took a 5-4 lead.

“I wanted to take some more grounders so I could go home and feel good tonight,” Radinsky said. “I thought I could have gotten a double play there and I just wanted to go home feeling good.

“I [messed] that one up. I’m not going to say it was an easy play and I’m not going to say it was a tough play, I just thought it was in my glove and I should have had it.

“It’s all reaction. I stayed out there until my back started hurting.”

Eric Karros and Raul Mondesi hit back-to-back homers in the fourth inning.

Karros, who has 28 homers and 88 runs batted in, hit a one-out two-run homer and Mondesi followed with a blast deep into the left-field box seats. It was the 11th time this season that the Dodgers have hit back-to-back homers and the first time since July 1.

The Dodgers had taken to calling pitcher Ismael Valdes Mr. Control after Valdes walked two or fewer batters in 23 of his first 26 starts.

But Valdes lost his control in the third inning as he issued two walks, a single, a run-scoring triple to Lance Johnson, who leads the majors with 17, and a three-run homer to Bernard Gilkey, who went two for three and drove in three runs, as the Mets scored four runs with two outs.

Gilkey, who has 102 RBIs, joined Hundley (100) to make it the first time in Met history two players have 100 RBIs in the same season.

Center fielder Wayne Kirby led off the bottom of the first with a walk that came after 13 pitches, seven of which he fouled off. Kirby singled in the winning run at Cincinnati on Aug. 11 by fighting off 15 pitches, including seven he fouled off.
