Number Available to Report Polluters

Drivers of smoke-belching cars and trucks beware: The next person you leave behind in a cloud of soot may be calling in your license plate number to the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District.
The agency and AT&T; Wireless Services have kicked off a new campaign, known as “*SMOG,” in an effort to rid Ventura County’s skies of unhealthful air pollution caused by vehicles.
Cellular phone users driving anywhere in the county can dial “*SMOG” and be immediately connected with the air pollution district to report the license plate numbers of smoking vehicles.
The owners of the offending automobiles will receive a letter advising them of the problem, but will not be fined.
Drivers who do not have a cellular phone may also report smoking vehicles by calling (800) 559-SMOG.
