Burbank schools fund-raiser Salle Dumm admitted during a videotaped police interview that she and a 17-year-old football player had sex last summer, according to evidence in her criminal trial Wednesday.

The tape, which showed Dumm visibly upset at times, was first played publicly Wednesday. Dumm, 51, is charged with engaging in unlawful sex with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in a scandal that rocked the Burbank School District.

“I went to bed,” Dumm stated on the tape, played in the courtroom of Superior Court Judge Thomas W. Stoever. “He came into my bedroom and crawled into bed.”

Later, Dumm told Burbank Police Det. William Taylor that the youth got on top of her and was gripping her arms. She said she could not move, but she also declined to say the youth forced himself on her.

The Dumm case triggered criminal charges against two football coaches and led to the resignation of the president of the school board after he admitted knowing of sex allegations but failing to report them to authorities.

On the videotape, Dumm tells Taylor about her encounter with the youth the night of July 14, 1995 at her Burbank home.

But testimony by the youth Tuesday differed from Dumm’s videotaped account. He said that Dumm invited him into her bedroom after he’d had three or four drinks of vodka and orange juice, and seduced him, saying “Do this for your team.”

The prosecution alleges that as president of the Burbank Educational Foundation, Dumm told the youth that a contribution would be made to help the Burbank High School football team in return for sex.

The playing of the videotape marked the conclusion of the prosecution’s case, which began Tuesday. The only witnesses called by Deputy Dist. Atty. David Vaughn were the youth and Taylor.

Stoever said he will rule today on defense allegations that police failed to properly warn Dumm of her rights during the videotaped interrogation.

Dumm’s lawyer, Jacque Boyle, is expected to present his opening statements today and begin calling defense witnesses.
