Profile Revealed Lifeguards’ Reality

Share

How refreshing to read such a well-written article on Bill Leach (“Watching the Waves No Day at the Beach,” Aug. 12). He encapsulates the real essence of beach lifesaving, without regressing to the “Baywatch” Hollywood stereotype. Your profile allows Leach to articulate what lifeguarding at our Southland beaches and lakes is all about: assisting, and in many cases saving the life of, the unsuspecting swimmer trapped in a life-threatening situation.

Like myself, many of us have made the decision to move on from beach lifeguarding for a variety of reasons, usually financial.

There are Bill Leaches in every lifeguard department in California. They provide experience, leadership and mentoring for the new group of rookies who are hired every year. But of primary importance, they keep Southern California’s principal recreation destinations safe for millions of visitors every year.
