Manz Leads UCI to Season-Opening Victory in Soccer

Tracie Manz’s first-half goal was the difference as UC Irvine defeated Oregon State, 1-0, Saturday in the Portland State Nike Challenge women’s soccer tournament in Portland.

Senior goaltender Stephanie Boes, formerly of Dana Hills High, made that lead stand up, making seven saves for her 22nd career shutout. Manz, formerly of Estancia High, scored at 18:36 of the first half off an assist from Michelle Kaping, formerly of Edison High.

In the other tournament game, San Diego defeated Portland State, 2-0.

The Anteaters (1-0) will play Portland State at 11 a.m. today.

At the Reebok Invitational at Titan Stadium, Fresno State defeated Cal State Fullerton, 6-2. Dolores Browning scored both goals for the Titans. In the other tournament game, San Diego State defeated Loyola Marymount, 3-0.

Fresno State plays San Diego State at 4 p.m. Monday. Fullerton plays Loyola at 6 p.m.

In a nonleague women’s game, UCSD defeated SCC, 1-0. Allison Hurley scored for UCSD.

In a nonleague men’s soccer game, SCC defeated UC Irvine, 5-2. Steve Gronowski scored twice and Henry Lopez, Martin Lippins and Fermin Gonzales scored for SCC.

In women’s volleyball:

Cal State Fullerton 3, Santa Clara 0--The Titans defeated the Broncos, 15-12, 15-13, 15-13, in the Anteater Women’s Volleyball Challenge at UCI.

UC Irvine 3, Nevada Las Vegas 1--Freshman Jamie Hill had 13 kills to lead the Anteaters to a 15-6, 15-11, 8-15, 15-10, victory.

In the Concordia Labor Day Volleyball Festival:

Cal Baptist defeated Concordia, 11-15, 15-0, 15-10, 15-5. Chico State defeated SCC, 11-15, 15-12, 15-5, 15-8. SCC then defeated Concordia, 13-15, 15-10, 16-18, 15-9, 15-12. In that match, Denise Lundberg had 11 kills. Christine Heims had nine kills, and was named to the all-tournament team.
