Principals Bring Experience, Ideas to New Academic Year
As the new principal at Capistrano Avenue Elementary School in Canoga Park, Frances Zamir said her experiences in regular and special education classes will serve her well in her post.
“All our special education students are involved in regular instruction,” she said. “That is one of the directions we are heading in with special ed.”
Zamir has spent her 29 years in education with the Los Angeles Unified School District--as a grade school teacher and as a resource specialist and a program specialist for children with learning problems.
She is excited about leading a LEARN campus, a program she was exposed to as an assistant principal before the Capistrano appointment.
“LEARN brings a new kind of professionalism to the school, where everybody becomes responsible for the education of children.”
Among Zamir’s goals is creating greater teamwork among staff, faculty and parents. “It will be a challenge to look at our roles in a different way,” Zamir said, “getting out of the paradigms we have about what a teacher is, what a parent is, and what an administrator is.”
She earned a bachelor of arts degree in English, a master of special education degree at Cal State Northridge and a master of education administration degree at Cal State Los Angeles. She is a certified resource specialist and holds a California administrative services credential.
