Even After Finishing 60th, the Tiger Beat Goes On

Do we have to have political correctness in sports? Knock off the ethnic hyphenated nonsense about Tiger Woods. His skin color didn’t get him three U.S. Amateur titles. Let’s just enjoy and acknowledge his skill.

Well, it didn’t take long. With the money still hot in his pocket, Tiger Woods is packing up the truck and moving to Florida. Can’t wait to leave California, he says. Too many people and too much smog. Never really liked California, he says.

I cannot imagine those comments were orchestrated by his sponsors’ public relations departments, unless they are abandoning their well-established California markets. Perhaps Tiger should have stayed in school and ripened a little more.

Anyway, Tiger, thanks for the memories. Next time you are in California, be sure to say hello to those who live where you never really wanted to be and who celebrated your run to the top. I have to think about whether I will give my two young sons the cap you autographed for me several years ago, or what I will tell them if I do.

Before we rush to anoint Tiger Woods as the next Nicklaus or Palmer, remember that amateur careers are rarely accurate forecasts of success in golf. By the way, what is Woods’ given first name and can he shoot free throws better than Shaq?
