MILES AND GIL

Don Heckman’s “Still Miles Ahead” (Sept. 1) brought tears to my eyes, longing to my soul, questions to my mind and urgency to my fingertips.

His portrayal of the personal friendship and professional collaboration of Miles Davis and Gil Evans, and the impact of that relationship on the development of “cool jazz,” as well as upon the creative achievements of each man, was itself an artistic gem.

He also caused me to ask: How can it be and what does it mean that Davis the man spoke in a voice so different from that of Davis the musician?
