Chargers Waiting for a Game

Either the San Diego Chargers are that good, or the Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals are that bad.

The way the Chargers figure it, the Green Bay Packers will decide.

In what turned out to be a three-hour warmup bout against a tomato can, the Chargers rolled over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, 27-14, in preparation for next week’s showdown in Green Bay.

“We know that next week’s game is a game that most people say will [determine] who will win the Super Bowl,” said Charger quarterback Stan Humphries.

If that statement is true, then “most people” were among the 55,880 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium on Sunday, watching Humphries complete 15 of his first 19 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown.

And watching cornerbacks Terrance Shaw and Dwayne Harper cover speedy receivers so tight that Bengal quarterback Jeff Blake missed on 16 of his first 20 passes.

And watching three Charger running backs break the 100-yard mark for a second consecutive week.

The Chargers played so efficient, leading, 14-0, in the second quarter, that Coach Bobby Ross was tongue tied.

“I told our squad that we need to jump-start our start,” Ross said.

Whatever. The other twisted part of the Chargers’ 2-0 start is the vulnerability of Junior Seau.

He only had four tackles Sunday, giving him only seven in two weeks.

Last week, his three tackles was a personal low since 1993.

When asked about his performance, Seau said, “We had a balanced defensive attack.”
